 MARY IMMACULATE PARISH COUNCIL
Minutes - May 19, 2008

Present: Kathy Hawkins, Ken Hawkins, Doris Noehren, Nicole Cavaliere, Michael Simon, Doug Kerr, Gary Lombardi, Johanna DiGiovanni, Stephanie Barry, Felix Grucci, Frank Dupointe, Judy Travers, and Fr. Jerry.

We opened with a reading and discussion of next Sunday’s readings.

The minutes of the April meeting were approved.

Fr. Jerry introduced Mark Wetzel, the parish’s new business manager and pastoral minister. Council members welcomed Mark to our parish.

The Soup and Bread evening was a success. Mark will look into the disbursement of the funds from the dinner.

Fr. Jerry announced that there will be a new youth ministry team in the fall. Although Tony Bellizi will continue to serve as youth minister, Patty Longo will join him in working with the teenagers of our parish.

Johanna reports that the Listening Session letters went out. She noted that the members of the General Office Work committee, established under our new stewardship campaign, were extremely helpful in stuffing envelopes and getting 1500 pieces of mail out. She recommends that we consider whether future mailings need to be personalized as it creates much more work in getting out general mailings. Stephanie suggests that we consider acquiring a laser printer for these kinds of mailings. Having our own printer would cut costs and handling time.

As for the Listening Sessions: Fr. Jerry has met and talked with Leona Arpino, who will be the facilitator. Council members are needed to serve as scribes and general helpers. The following people volunteered:
June 7 – 5:00 mass: Ken and Doug, scribes; Felix, helper
June 8 – 9:00 mass: Stephanie and Joe, scribes; Michael, helper
June 8 – 11:00 mass: Joe and Judy, scribes; Doris and Nicole, helpers
Also, Joe will bring the large post-its, Stephanie will supply the sign-in sheets, badges, and easels, and Ken will bring clipboards.

So as not to lose all parish council members at the same time, it was decided that the terms of half of the members would expire June 2010 and the other half in June of 2011. From then on, council members will serve three-year terms and, if necessary, elections will be held to determine future council members.

Joe suggested that the lighting in the auditorium be looked at as the altar is not well lit and it is particularly difficult to read at the ambo. Mark will look at the lighting to see if it can be adjusted.

At the last parish finance meeting, a suggestion was made to fix the ambo and altar in the auditorium. Fr. Jerry talked with Peter, who built our beautiful new altar in the little church, and he is willing to make an ambo and altar for the auditorium. Also, Fr. Jerry reports that the rails for the altar in the auditorium should be installed soon. And after the necessary fundraising is completed, new bathrooms will be installed in the auditorium.

Kathy suggests that we have a magic show for the youth of the parish. She will look into hiring a magician.

Stephanie will contact Ellen Sullivan, the coordinator of the Special Events committee, to discuss a date for the parish picnic.

The parish yard sale will be held on August 9.

Our next meeting will be June 9 at 7:30 in the Mary Hughes Cottage.

Respectfully submitted,
Judy Travers

Council Mission

The Parish Council of Mary Immaculate welcomes all parishioners to contact us with ideas, concerns, suggestions and comments regarding the life of the parish. In order for Mary Immaculate to meet the needs of its members, those needs must be identified and addressed. To do this, we need your help.

It is the mission of the Parish Council to maintain the integrity of the parish, not to run the day-to-day activities of the parish. We, as Council members, are a forum for consultation for both the pastor and for members of the parish. It is our mission to engage in ongoing dialogue about the needs, feeling, hopes and reactions of parishioners. Through prayer, study and listening we begin to identify and prioritize the ways in which the parish is being called to live out its specific mission, and we provide information and advice for long-range planning in the parish. In order to accomplish this, we seek to know the people of the parish well.

We encourage you to reach out to any member of the Council, as we are your representatives in framing the future of Mary Immaculate. Over the next few months, the Parish Council will be hosting forums to encourage involvement in the life of the parish, and we hope you will look for these opportunities, as well as share with us your ideas.
